Students as Integral Contributors to Hospitality
An interview with
Holly Tran
Faculty, ACSS, UCW

UCWBackpack: As an expert in hospitality, what do you think university students should consider when choosing a place to visit in Vancouver?
Honestly, choosing where to go or what to eat really depends on so many little things—your mood, your budget, who you're with, what kind of vibe you're after. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. But there’s a quote I love that I often share with students: “Life is a book, and those who don’t travel read only one page.” And I really believe that. You don’t need to travel far or spend a lot. Sometimes the best adventures are right around the corner.
We’re incredibly lucky to live in B.C., especially around Vancouver. There’s so much beauty here that’s completely free to enjoy. If you haven’t been yet, go check out Kitsilano Beach, Buntzen Lake, Lynn Canyon, Deep Cove, Stanley Park, Queen Elizabeth Park, Burnaby Mountain… there are so many gems. Most of them are just a bus ride away. And being out in nature, even for a short walk, can be such a great way to clear your head, get inspired, or just take a break from the pressure of school.
To students, I always say: don’t wait. Get out there. Try things. Explore new places. You don’t have to go far or spend big to have meaningful experiences. Talk to people. Try that hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Walk around a new neighborhood. Every time you step out of your comfort zone, you grow a little. You learn something—not just about the place, but about yourself.
UCWBackpack: Beyond price, what factors should students pay attention to when selecting a dining experience?
When it comes to dining, yes, price matters (we’ve all been there!). But think about the experience too. What kind of atmosphere are you looking for? Do you want somewhere cozy and quiet, or somewhere social and fun? Are you craving comfort food or curious about something new? Vancouver has an amazing food scene—different cultures, different flavors, something for every taste.
But while you’re out and about, just remember to be smart. Keep an eye on your surroundings. Look out for your friends. Be respectful of the communities you’re visiting. And support local when you can—those small businesses really appreciate it.
UCWBackpack: Students may spend a good amount of time exploring the attraction or trying various foods and restaurants. What should they be careful and cautious about?
Travel isn’t just about pretty views or cool photos. It’s about opening your mind. It’s about learning, connecting, and sometimes even getting a little uncomfortable in the best way possible. And who knows? One random outing might lead to a new friendship, a career idea, or just a moment that sticks with you for a long time.
So go explore. Be curious. And keep adding pages to your story.
UCWBackpack: To what extent are students directly or indirectly connected to the hospitality industry in a city like Vancouver?
Believe it or not, more than 25% of Canada’s hospitality workforce is made up of international students (Stat Canada, 2021). That’s a pretty powerful reminder of how important students are to this industry. And in a city like Vancouver, where tourism and hospitality are part of everyday life, students are more connected to it than they might think.
Hospitality isn't just about working the front desk at a hotel or serving tables at a restaurant (although those are great ways to start!). The industry is so much bigger than that. There are roles in event planning, revenue management, digital marketing, guest experience, travel services, and even in Destination Management Organizations (DMOs). So if you're someone who loves organizing, creating, solving problems, or connecting with people—there’s a space for you here.
Globally, the hospitality and tourism sector is a major employer, supporting 1 in every 10 jobs worldwide (UNWTO, 2019). That’s a massive part of the workforce—and it shows how many paths exist, and how far those paths can take you.
Here in Vancouver and across B.C., that means tons of opportunities for students—not just jobs, but experiences that can help you build skills, meet people, and maybe even discover your own career path. Whether you’re drawn to the numbers side like revenue management, the creative side like marketing, or the service side like guest experience, there’s a niche for every personality and every passion.
So yes, students are a big part of hospitality. And for those who are open to it, it’s also an industry full of possibility, variety, and maybe even your next big idea.
UCWBackpack: What opportunities exist for university students to start a business or build a career in the hospitality industry in Vancouver or BC more broadly?
Hospitality is an interesting industry, but it’s also not easy. It’s competitive, it moves fast, and it can be a tough environment sometimes. High turnover, long hours, and a lot of pressure? That’s part of it. For many people, it starts as a first job. Maybe you're working in a hotel, a restaurant, or at the front desk somewhere. And honestly? That’s a great place to begin. It teaches you how to work with people, how to stay calm under pressure, and how to adapt quickly.
Starting a business is a great idea! If you’re curious, creative, and willing to put in the work, it can grow into a career, and even more than that, something you build on your own.
That’s where I love to talk about Blue Ocean Strategy (Kim & Mauborgne, n.d.) You don’t have to fight for space in a market that’s already crowded (the “red ocean”). Instead, make your own ocean. Think differently. Ask, “What’s missing?” or “What could I do better?” Maybe it’s a pop-up food experience for international students. Maybe it’s a local tour that shows off hidden gems in the city. Maybe it’s helping visitors connect with local culture through storytelling, food, or music. There are so many angles.
You don’t need to have a huge business plan right away. Just an idea. Start small. Test things. Talk to people. Some of the best businesses I’ve seen started with a side hustle or a weekend project.
And one last thing, success isn’t always about starting at the top. I’ve seen people start out bussing tables or working in guest services and later become revenue managers, directors of sales, even general managers. They stayed curious, they kept learning, and they genuinely cared about their work by being consistent, learning as they go, and staying passionate about what they do.
So if you’re thinking about hospitality, go for it. Just be ready to learn, work hard, and maybe think a little outside the box. Who knows? You might just build something amazing and make a new path not just for yourself, but for others too.
UCWBackpack: How can hospitality services in Vancouver become more inclusive and accessible for university students? What challenges or gaps do you see?
These are big questions, and honestly, I don’t think I’m the person with all the answers. Making hospitality more inclusive and accessible takes more than good intentions. It involves policies, pricing, training, and bigger systems that aren’t easy to fix overnight.
But what I can speak to is what I see working with students every day. And from that perspective, I can say: there are definitely gaps. A lot of hospitality services just aren’t really designed with students in mind. Whether you're new to the city or you’ve lived here for years, it’s not always easy to find experiences that feel affordable, welcoming, and relevant.
Simple things like student discounts, fair pricing, and friendly, open service can make a big difference. It’s not always about offering more—it’s just about being thoughtful. Students don’t expect luxury. They just want to feel seen and respected.
And then there’s the fact that so many students are also working in hospitality. It’s often their part-time job while they’re studying. But that side can be tough too. High turnover, low pay, limited training… it’s easy to feel like you’re just there to fill a shift. I’ve seen students give so much to their jobs, but not always get the support or chances they deserve.
From the student side, it’s also about being open—exploring what’s out there, asking questions, and being willing to engage with the industry in different ways. Sometimes we focus too much on the “perfect” experience and forget that the real value comes from the people we meet and the small moments along the way.
There’s always room for improvement, but I also believe in the power of students to shape the future of this industry. Many of you will go on to work in hospitality—or even run your own businesses. So maybe the real change will come from the inside, from people like you who care about making others feel welcome, respected, and included.

We invited students to recommend their favorite cafes and restaurants, and here are some of the most popular spots they loved and why they stood out:

Breka Bakery & café
One of my favourite spots in Vancouver is Breka Bakery & Café. Breka is open 24/7, making it perfect for a late-night snack or an early morning coffee. I visited the near location which is located at Fraser Street Vancouver with my friend and we tried their famous cheese sandwich and lavender latte both of were delicious. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with plenty of seating and a relaxed vibe. Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to study, catch up with a friend, or grab a quick bite, Breka is an excellent choice.

Ellio Volpe
If you like or crave Italian cuisine one day, Ellio Volpe is one of my top 3 go-to places without hesitating it a second. Had the pleasure to meet the owner while at was working as a bartender in a Distillery in North Vancouver, he told me briefly about his place. From a local family inn Canada with strong Italian heritage, Ellio Volpe is 1 of 3 Italian restaurants from the brand and by far my favourite. We got there and we were gifted by the house 2 impressive gin cocktails that looked amazing and of course an amazing taste! Ellio Volpe comprises a detailed and carefully built list of hand made artisanal pizzas on their own kneaded house dough and selected toppings to reassemble that Italian freshness. Pastas are something you can’t miss as well as the lamb chops to add some protein to the venue. Salads over here are easily nothing I’ve seen before, not boring, joyful, flavourful, no dressing needed: just imagine what it feels to drive on a highway with your favorite playlist, that’s how it feels to order a salad at Ellio Volpe. Ellio Volpe idea for a dinning configuration skips the tradition of an individual plate for each costumer: here everything is meant to be shared. Portions are not outrageously big, but if you order few dishes, you’ll end up more than full, 100% guaranteed. Take your date, take your wife, take your mom, I can guarantee you it might be one of the best dates you’ll have.

Timbertrain Coffee Roasters
A Comfortable Atmosphere at Timbertrain Coffee Roasters – Vancouver, BC
If you’re a coffee enthusiast searching for a cozy and welcoming café in Vancouver, Timbertrain Coffee Roasters is a place you shouldn’t miss. Situated in the center of Gastown (311 W Cordova St, Vancouver, BC), this café provides a comfortable ambiance with a contemporary but rustic style. I went to Timbertrain on a rainy afternoon, enhancing the experience even more. As soon as I entered, the delightful scent of freshly brewed coffee enveloped me, immediately creating a sense of belonging.
I requested a latte and a croissant, and both were superb. The latte had a silky texture and was ideally balanced, featuring lovely latte art atop. The croissant was crisp and rich—perfectly suited to my coffee. What I appreciated the most was the welcoming baristas and the serene atmosphere, creating a perfect place to unwind or finish some tasks.
Whether you require a caffeine boost or a tranquil spot to relax, Timbertrain is definitely worth checking out. The next time you visit Gastown, be sure to give it a go!

Hydra
One day, I was craving something different from my regular meals, so I stepped out of my school campus. I randomly came across a restaurant named Hydra at The Exchange Hotel. I had an amazing experience there and immediately started loving the place.
As I entered the restaurant through the front entrance of Hydra on the ground floor, I noticed that the staircase had beautifully curved steps leading to the first floor, which gave the place a very royal and classy feel. Moving up to the main floor, I saw a stunning bar that showcased a wide variety of Greek wines. The food was absolutely fantastic.
To add to that, the customer service was excellent. I had lunch there during happy hour, which gave us the chance to try different dishes at more affordable prices. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. I’ve started visiting regularly, drawn in by the elegant interior—and I’m absolutely loving it!

Chai Wagon
The authentic Indian tea experience at Chaiwagon provides visitors with the perfect opportunity to have an authentic tea break in Vancouver. You can find this intimate shop in the urban area where they offer scented chai tea alongside cold beverages while serving typical Indian treats that provide a taste of home.
The vada pav and crispy samosas were my selection from Chaiwagon which I enjoyed as I sipped their trademark chai. You found exact Indian street-food flavors in this combination of spicy tangy sensations which brought comfort just like the Indian street cha waffle stalls. The establishment's atmosphere incorporated tricolor balloons and traditional decorations which created a nostalgic environment.
Chaiwagon provides the optimal combination of beloved chai flavors together with comforting warmth to anyone searching for either a nostalgic taste or a wonderful chai experience. This establishment serves as more than a local café because it transports Vancouver residents to an authentic Indian experience. The area visitors should take advantage of their charming tea break at this location.

D Plus Pizza
Well, I always prefer to go to D Plus Pizza at 10207 King George Blvd, Surrey, BC V3T 2W6 because the food there is amazing and delicious, as well as cheaper than other places. It’s also very close to my home. I always try new dishes like pizza, Shahi Paneer, samosas, and many more because everything is always fresh, and I’m always satisfied.
If I talk about the staff at this restaurant, they are very nice and polite people who always help me choose the right food. My favorite pizza is Achari Paneer Pizza, which I usually order from this place. I also order online through Uber Eats, and they offer home delivery as well as tiffin services, which are very tasty.
They also provide late-night food service, and there are many vegetarian options available. They offer special deals on occasions like Diwali, New Year, and Christmas, allowing people to enjoy cultural foods.

La Forêt Coffee House
La Forêt in Burnaby was by far the most fascinating coffeehouse I've ever been to in British Columbia. The indoor atmosphere of the café is pleasant with an abundance of greens, which is like being within a peaceful forest. The blending of nature and modern design is highly calming, perfect for studying, working, or meeting friends.
I visited La Forêt on a Friday night with a friend. We ordered lattes, chocolate cake, and a sandwich, which came with a side salad. The coffee was smooth and rich, while the food was fresh and good. I specifically liked the ample seating and pleasant lighting, as they added value to the visit. The business was full yet still had a serene and welcoming ambiance.

If you’re looking for an aesthetic and refreshing coffee shop vibe in the Langley or Cloverdale area, then you absolutely need to visit Sweet Revenge Bakery and Café.
As a coffee lover, I’m always on the hunt for cozy spots to enjoy my “me time.” One day, on my way back from work, I noticed this café with a neon-lit coffee mug sign at the entrance—it immediately caught my attention, and I couldn’t resist stepping inside.

Brew and Broom is a very popular café in Edmonton, and it’s a favorite spot for many people. It only has two branches, both located in Edmonton, which makes it a local gem. It’s the kind of place where people go to relax, hang out with friends, or even get some work done while enjoying a good drink or snack.

Wendel’s Bookstore & Café
If I had to recommend a place to visit in Vancouver, I would 100% suggest Wendel’s Bookstore & Café in Fort Langley. It’s located right next to the railway line, and if you walk for just five minutes, you can experience a beautiful sunset by the river, which is incredibly calm and peaceful.
I’ve been there many times, and every visit makes me feel so connected to nature. But it’s not just the location—the whole town has a unique charm. Fort Langley is a quiet, private community with no big fast-food chains or large supermarkets. Instead, they have their own local shops, cafés, and even their own small Walmart. Almost everyone knows each other, making it a truly happy and welcoming town.
